Sketching in Southwestern Ontario

Since joining the Urban Sketchers Waterloo Region group a few years back, I’ve had the opportunity to visit places close to home that I would never think of going by myself. The group is such a friendly and welcoming bunch, always sharing tips and encouraging words. I’ve learned so much about drawing from life - how to dial in my observation skills, yet not worrying so much about realism as much as recording the mood of place. Though my illustration style is more cartoony, the skills I have gained from urban sketching have helped me in all aspects of my creative pursuits, and is a constant reminder that you don’t need to be anywhere special to draw what you see in front of you. Here’s a look back on some of my favourite sketches - you can click through to my Instagram posts for more images and descriptions.
